Kid job
Kids can measure ingredients, stir the yeast, mix the dough, roll the ropes, and sprinkle the salt. A grown-up handles the hot oven and the boiling water bath.
What you need
- 4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 1 1/4 cups warm water (110°F/45°C), plus a little extra if needed
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, plus a little extra for greasing
- 4 cups hot water
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1/4 cup kosher salt for sprinkling on top
How to make it
- 1In a medium bowl, stir together the yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar, and warm water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until it gets foamy and creamy — that means the yeast is waking up!
- 2In a large bowl, mix the flour, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt. Make a little well in the center like a small nest.
- 3Pour the foamy yeast mixture and 1 tablespoon oil into the well. Stir everything together until a dough forms. If it looks dry, add 1 or 2 more tablespoons of water.
- 4Sprinkle a little flour on a clean counter and knead the dough for about 7 minutes, until it feels smooth and springy — this is a great arm workout!
- 5Lightly oil a big bowl, put the dough inside, and turn it so the whole ball is coated with oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap.
- 6Let the dough rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, until it doubles in size — like a puffy cloud!
- 7Ask a grown-up to heat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and grease two baking sheets.
- 8Pour 4 cups of hot water into a large bowl and stir in the baking soda until it dissolves. This bath is what makes pretzels shiny and chewy!
- 9Gently punch down the risen dough and turn it onto a lightly floured surface. Divide it into 12 equal pieces.
- 10Roll each piece into a long rope, then shape it into a straight rod or a traditional pretzel twist — either way, it is holding to the rod!
- 11Dip each shaped pretzel into the hot baking-soda water, then place it on a prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle kosher salt on top.
- 12Ask a grown-up to bake the pretzels for about 8 minutes, until they are golden brown and smell amazing.
- 13Let them cool for a few minutes, then enjoy warm with your favorite dip — mustard, cheese sauce, or even a little melted butter!
Grown-ups: please help with the oven, the stove, and anything sharp.
