Kid job

Kids can mix the crust, stir the pudding, fold in the whipped topping, and sprinkle the chocolate chips. A grown-up handles the oven and the hot baking pan.

What you need

  • CRUST LAYER:
  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • CREAM CHEESE LAYER:
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup frozen whipped topping, thawed (save the rest for the top!)
  • PUDDING LAYER:
  • 2 packages (3.4 oz each) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 3 cups cold milk
  • TOP LAYER:
  • 3 to 4 cups thawed frozen whipped topping
  • Chocolate shavings, mini chocolate chips, or chopped pecans for the top

How to make it

  1. 1Ask a grown-up to heat the oven to 350°F.
  2. 2In a bowl, stir the graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and melted butter until it feels like wet sand — this is the firm foundation, line 1!
  3. 3Press the crumb mixture firmly into the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch pan.
  4. 4Ask a grown-up to bake the crust for 10 minutes, then let it cool completely. Patience makes the foundation strong!
  5. 5For the cream cheese layer, beat the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar together until smooth and fluffy.
  6. 6Gently fold in 1 cup of whipped topping, then spread it evenly over the cooled crust — that's line 2!
  7. 7For the pudding layer, whisk the instant chocolate pudding mixes with the cold milk for about 2 minutes, until it starts to thicken.
  8. 8Pour and spread the pudding over the cream cheese layer — line 3, rich and chocolatey!
  9. 9Spread the rest of the whipped topping over the pudding like a fluffy cloud — line 4!
  10. 10Sprinkle chocolate shavings, mini chocolate chips, or chopped pecans on top for the finishing touch.
  11. 11Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight, so the layers can set up perfectly — good things take time!
  12. 12When it is nice and firm, have a grown-up cut it into squares. Serve cold and enjoy every line upon line bite!

Grown-ups: please help with the oven, the stove, and anything sharp.
