Kid job

Kids can pop the bag, measure the glaze, stir it up, and toss the popcorn until every piece is shiny. A grown-up handles the hot microwave and oven if you choose the crunchy way.

What you need

  • 1 bag microwave popcorn (plain or lightly salted)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons golden syrup (or light corn syrup)

How to make it

  1. 1Ask a grown-up to help you microwave the popcorn bag following the package directions.
  2. 2Carefully pour the popped popcorn into a big heatproof bowl. Pick out any unpopped kernels — this is a grown-up or big-kid job.
  3. 3Put the butter, brown sugar, and golden syrup into a medium microwave-safe bowl or glass measuring cup.
  4. 4Microwave on high for 30 to 45 seconds until the butter is melted.
  5. 5Stir the glaze really well until the sugar dissolves and it looks smooth and glossy.
  6. 6Pour the warm glaze over the popcorn.
  7. 7Use a spatula to toss the popcorn quickly until every piece is coated with sticky sweetness.
  8. 8Choose your finish: eat it right away for a chewy, gooey treat, or ask a grown-up to spread it on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 250°F for 15 to 20 minutes, tossing once, for a crunchy candy coating.

Grown-ups: please help with the oven, the stove, and anything sharp.
