Makes

One 9 x 13 pan (about 30 bars)

Time

About 40 minutes

Kid job

Kids can mix the crust, sprinkle the chips and coconut, and drizzle the sweet milk. A grown-up handles the oven.

What you need

  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/3 cups shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts work great — skip if allergic)

How to make it

  1. 1Ask a grown-up to heat the oven to 350°F (325°F if using a glass pan).
  2. 2In a bowl, stir the graham cracker crumbs and melted butter together until it feels like wet sand.
  3. 3Press the crumb mixture into the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch pan to make the crust — this is the earth, day 1! And it was good!
  4. 4Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the crust — like light spreading across the world, day 2. And it was good!
  5. 5Sprinkle the butterscotch and chocolate chips on top — the waters and the sky, days 2 and 3. And it was good!
  6. 6Add the shredded coconut for land, plants, and trees, day 3. And it was good!
  7. 7Sprinkle the nuts on top for the birds, fish, and animals, days 5 and 6. And it was good!
  8. 8Ask a grown-up to bake the pan for 25–30 minutes, until the edges are golden and bubbly.
  9. 9Let the bars cool completely — this is the rest on day 7! And it was good!
  10. 10Have a grown-up cut into squares. Enjoy your seven-layer creation. And it was very good!

Grown-ups: please help with the oven, the stove, and anything sharp.
